Product Description

With more than 650,000 copies sold, massage therapist Lucinda Lidell's Book of Massage has been updated with new photos and instructional drawings. Not for the prudish, as the subjects in most of the photos are completely in the buff, the book presents an intense, information-packed, step-by-step guide to traditional massage, shiatsu, and reflexology.

No matter which method you choose to focus on (you're advised to choose one at a time), Lidell is thorough in her explanations of the strokes and techniques necessary to give relaxing, therapeutic massage in the privacy of your own home. Detailed drawings, diagrams, and photographs help to further demonstrate how to address each individual body part.

Divided into distinct chapters for each of the three methods, The Book of Massage also includes several sections that Lidell stresses are fundamental to all types of massage. The first is "Beginning," with information such as creating the right atmosphere (a warm room and soft lighting), applying oil, and finding a comfortable position. Additionally, Lidell suggests that everyone should review sections on the human touch and anatomy, both of which oddly come at the end of the book.

As thorough as The Book of Massage may be, do not expect to walk away from it an expert. As with any skill worth learning, giving good massage takes time, study, and practice, practice, practice. --Bree Altman

The Whole Truth: A Full Review Of The Good, Bad And Nude!

Review Date: May 26, 2010
Reviewer: M. Palmer, Los Angeles, CA
Good: First things first, this massage instruction guide focuses on core aspects of shiatsu, reflexology and Swedish massage techniques. Many reviews are split, some feeling that the book is "best suited for couples and close friends". However, this book provides step-by-step professional grade instruction that can be used by the novice masseur or the seasoned LMT.

What makes the book great, among a ton of other points, is that it shares a fundamental teaching on every subject included in its 192 pages of knowledge. I haven't come across any other book that discusses, in detail, aspects relating to baby message, body reading and body positioning so simply and comprehensibly!

Bad: The guide's anatomy section is a bit scarce with regards to the medical technicalities. But, the book explains the different areas of the body with relating to physical touch and massage. I mean, isn't that the reason we bought this book anyhow?

Nude: Nudity I'll admit isn't for the faint but the images paint a REALISTIC picture for the reader and as a visual learner, I can most certainly appreciate that (wink, wink)!

So, all in all it's a great instructional tool. By the way if you're looking for a REAL way to apply your professional skill set don't hesitate to get Meagan Holub's "The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist"(Yes you can get it on kindle)! Meagan's chapter on intuition is charging with an intuitive view on sensory and intuition as it applies to massage, and life. It's such a great companion to The Whole Truth as it will absolutely relate to body reading and the entire aura of this book. Both are priceless.

A very useful book for beginners. When learning massage, practise is far more important, but this book explains very clearly the different techniques and sequences. The drawings may look a bit outdated but are self-explanatory and useful.
Good strategy

Good book to start with, but you need the practice on different people to get different feedback. Try to find those people who are hard to please.
Badly dated material, pretentious, hard to follow

Review Date: October 10, 2009
Reviewer: Sonia Margolis, New York City
This book appears to have been created many years ago and now looks its age. The techniques are disorganized and the book includes many pages of questionable and hard to figure out "options." The author was showing off and we readers must wade through page after page of needlessly difficult massage instructions. The art seems dated too and is poorly done. Much of the book is devoted to "Shiatsu" a Japanese therapy that can be very painful and doesn't belong in a massage book. To summarize: a little useful material here and there but many techniques employing "pressure points" and similar quackery. Really not worth your time.
A "Nice" Intoduction to Massage

As a connoisseur of massages and a practitioner I thought to get this book for a friend of mine who is beginning their own massage practice. Although the title promises alot, it really just gives you the following information:

-Basic Western Massage (Basic Body rub techniques)
-Shiatsu
-Reflexology

There are many of other disciplines I would have liked to see covered, but for fundamentals it is a good beginners book. It gives you the basics and some common sense advice on creating an environment and why human touch is so important. The illustrations are easy to understand, and the artist conveys the sensuality of touch very well. If you want an introductory book this is one to get, especially for the novice and beginning masseur/masseuse.
