About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

How to Use a Stationary Exercise Bike

Great bike

I've never had much luck with buying items that needed assembly in the past, mostly because the box always seems to be missing some crucial component and/or pieces don't fit like they should. My luck changed with this bike! First of all, it came so well packaged that there was never any threat of losing an important small piece in amongst the packaging material. Every screw and bolt was accounted for and fit well. Plus, the bike came with all the tools necessary for assembly. This is really important for those of us with limited home toolboxes. The instructions are easy to read and understand. I'm very, very pleased with the whole experience. I only swore once when I dropped a screw (which was just my own inherent clumsiness at work lol). Using the bike itself is smooth and the readout is easy to understand and adjust your workout. The heart monitor is a nice plus as well. I, like a couple of other reviewers mentioned, was also a little surprised that the manufacturer recommended weight limit was set at 275 pounds. The bike is SOLID and the seat is wide enough to accomodate behinds of all sizes. Overall a great buy.
Don't Order This Bike!

Unless you are willing to go through a LOT of hassle. Don't order this bike.
My bike arrived and the resistance feature did not work. Nautilus/Schwinn offered to replace the bike, then changed their mind and told me to send it back to Amazon. Packing up this product was impossible... like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube.
Replacement bike arrived right away (to Amazon's credit) and works fine.
So unless if you are willing to take a gamble and go through the grief of having a non-functioning bike, DON"T ORDER THIS BIKE.
Good product from Schwinn

My wife wanted an excercise bike, and based on the reviews this was the winner. Turns out, it deserves the praise based on first impressions. It was easy to assemble, there was no damage during shipping, and it works great after assembling. Sure there are several small things I would like to see improved, most notably the seat, but those changes would add another $100 to the price. For the price category this is by far the best value and quality. I'm hoping we get 5 yrs out of it, and lets hope it doesn't just collect dust! I will likely replace the seat, and once the warranty expires on the electronics I'll rig a 6V adapter up to it.

Even better than I expected

This bike arrived today only one week after ordering it - love that free super saver shipping! The package is about 70 lbs and reasonable for one person to drag around, but I'd get help if you have to haul it up stairs. The item is masterfully and very densely packed by Schwinn (actually, it's made by Nautilus - this is a quality piece of equipment); there's no way it would get damaged in shipping. Many folks have already pointed out the many high points of this device, so I'll mostly focus on the things that were surprising to me (and mostly in a positive sense!).

Pros:
Unlike what many people said, this is *not* hard to assemble. It took me less than an hour, and that was after a glass of wine - this was far easier to put together than most IKEA furniture. Furthermore, unlike most kits that come with their own tools, this one comes with tools that are actually sufficient to properly build the device. Next, the resistance does have a pretty wide range - reading some of the reviews I thought that the resistance might only be effective for very lightweight exercises. I'm in pretty good shape (I work occasionally as a dancer/model, though it's not my primary gig), 5'8" and 135lbs, I work out on ellipticals at the gym regularly, and the upper resistance levels on this bike were too much for me to keep up for more than a half minute or so. I found that even the low resistances were pretty tough after half an hour or so - I worked up a great sweat in my living room and loved it! I certainly believe there are individuals that could do an hour on this bike at maximum resistance, but those folks are way more hardcore than I am. Next, the footprint of this bike is *tiny* - the base is only about 19" x 27", and the convenient wheels make it easy to move around your place. I have a pretty small apartment and I was worried that this would be a hulking, ugly mass, but in fact it's sleek, unobtrusive, and small. Finally, the display is not that hard to read. If you have decent lighting, you'll have no problem reading it. It's also not that hard to use the onboard computer - if you've used more than one kind of machine at the gym, you'll figure it out pretty quickly.

Cons:
First, the seat post wobbles a tiny bit. Not enough to be dangeorus or disconcerting, but it's just a disappointment given how solid everything else on the bike is. Second, there is nowhere to rest an mp3 player, phone, remote, book, etc. They could easily have added a thin plastic ridge to the computer, but just didn't. I'll probabaly have to make something that will accomplish this purpose. Next, as everyone reported, the seat is not that comfortable, but it's not that uncomfortable either. I was suffering more in my legs from the workout than in my seat :) I'm certain the recumbent version of this bike is more comfortable, but this one both takes less space and works out your abs (since they're compressed while you're hunched over the bike). Finally, the body is plastic and covered with a thin coat of grey metallic paint - some of the tape from the packaging lifted off a patch of the paint revealing the black surface below; certainly this paint job will scratch off easily. Not a big deal, but it may have been better if they'd just left that part of the bike black.

Overall, this is an excellent home workout device - I'm amazed that you can get something this professional (pulse readout, programmable workout, magnetic resistance, tiny footprint) for so little. Stop worrying about it and buy it, you won't regret it!

Good value for the money now that I've fixed it. Poor quality control.

Reviewer: KingBoy,
I just took delivery of a Schwinn Active 10. While it is at the low end of the price scale for exercise bikes, initial impressions are not good regarding Schwinns quality control. Upon unboxing I immediately noticed that the main cover has an area on top, between the two upright tubes, where the paint is flaking off. I suspect that there was some grease on the plastic that prevented the silver paint from adhering properly. I decided that didn't warrant sending it back, so I continued the assembly only to find that the bike made a scraping noise once per revolution when being ridden. I decided to investigate rather than immediately sending it back and after removing the covers (easy after prying out the back inserts that surround the crank) found that the main crank gear is bent and rubs against the handlebar upright tube. A small amount of brute force to reshape it, and a slight loosing of the main bearing, and I now have a quiet bike. Operationally, the bike has everything I need, so I'll be keeping it as long as nothing else goes wrong. The controls are easy to use and I think that the 8 resistance settings more than enough. If you don't have the QC problems that I had, then this bike is good value for the money. 3/5 (would have been 4/5).
